My research has focused on clinical trials in the hematologic malignancies. I have studied the pharmacokinetics of cytarabine in the spinal fluid when given intravenously and I identified renal function as the most important factor in predicting central nervous system toxicity from cytarabine. I was the campus PI on a clinical trial of vaccine therapy for acute myeloid leukemia. I participated in UCSF-initiated trials for treating adults with AML, lymphoma, and ALL, some of which involved stem cell transplantation. I participate in clinical protocols for the national group called Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB). I was national PI on CALGB 59909, a trial for treating mantle cell lymphoma and involving stem cell transplantation.
