Reproduction and Fertility

At the core of this research is UCSF’s Human Embryo and Gamete Bank where tissues obtained during in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, such as eggs, embryos, and sperm, that would normally be discarded, will are banked.  The Bank allows these very precious resources to be used optimally and in accordance with ethical guidelines.  This program will provide benefits that include improvements in embryo culture that will translate into an increase in successful IVF outcomes.  We expect that an improved ability to identify healthy, genetically normal embryos will allow fewer embryos to be transferred during assisted reproduction, thus decreasing the incidence of multiple gestations.  We also envision improved early detection of adverse pregnancy outcomes that will allow possible interventions such as fetal surgery. Finally, an infrastructure has been established to derive and distribute Federal and nonFederal hESC as a resource for the entire scientific community.
